Name changed to Lake Worth after
learning there was already a town in Florida called Lucerne.The
city took on the name of the lake which was itself named after
General William J. Worth,a famous US General during the war
against the Seminole Indians (The Florida War - 1835-1842). |

The first lighted sign was installed
to advertise the City of Lake Worth, just one problem Lake Worth
was spelled "LakeWorth" in one word. |

The Lake Worth Casino was opened
including a salt-water swimming pool. |

Lake Worth Golf Course was opened.
This photograph shows Babe Ruth who frequently played at the golf
course during Spring Training and during the off- season.
Originally only 9 holes in 1945, the Golf Commission agreed to
expand the course to 18 holes. Dick Wilson, the course architect,
redesigned the existing nine holes and added an additional nine
holes. In the fall of 1948, Lake Worth Golf's new 18 hole course
was opened for play. |

The city was severely damaged in the
hurricane, toppling the bell tower on the elementary school (today
the City Hall Annex) and destroying the beachfront casino and
automobile bridge over Lake Worth. |

The Lake Worth municipal pier
construction began. |

¹The city was hit especially hard by
Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne and Wilma. Their famous fishing pier
was the most damaged and with the help of FEMA it is now being
